Summer is nearing its end. On this bittersweet long weekend, many of us will escape the city in a glorious bid to escape the season’s demise. In our travels, in the small towns and roadside stops will be harbingers of the intensified ingenuity we all hope to bring to our work in September. I refer to the clever names created by the small businesses of this country, very often more effective at piquing customer interest and telling the brand story than corporations with resources millions of times greater.
A shortlist of interesting names I’ve noticed this summer:
Espressamente, at the Dorval Marriott: Absolutely gorgeous.
Air Creebec, at Pierre Trudeau International: Clever, but would sound better and be easier to say as “Creebec Air”
Foodism, in Montreal: A memorable play on Buddhism.
The Merchant of Tennis, Toronto: A bit of a groaner, but memorable.
Ma Zone, Toronto: One of the most meaningful names I’ve ever seen. Think through the many levels.
